That perches in the soul,
And sings the tune without the words,
And never stops at all,
And sweetest in the gale is heard;
And sore must be the storm
That could abash the little bird
That kept so many warm.
I've heard it in the chilliest land
And on the strangest sea;
Yet, never, in extremity,
It asked a crumb of me.
I am constantly amazed by how the littlest efforts we make toward the betterment of our parenting abilities seem to reap great rewards. When I put my hand in the Savior's and let Him lead me by his example it feels like I am holding hands with hope. It shouldn't come as a surprise that He is so willing to offer aid to us in our most important responsibility (our children).
I always get very frustrated about bedtime. When I close the doors to my children's rooms, I view it (too strongly) as a mark to the end of my parental responsibility for the day. I don't have to feed anyone, answer another question, break up another argument or remind anyone of a task uncompleted.
You see the problem here...
It hurt me to see how much the lack of compassion had built me into a type of dictatorish, imperial meanie. I repented. I asked for help in being compassionate. I began to read again Christlike Parenting by Dr. Glenn I Latham. It's amazing how easy a self-help book can be when you really need help. The thing that I read yesterday that really stuck with me was about keeping the home a place where the child feels safe. A place where they know they can bring their concerns up for discussion without worrying they are going to be reviled, or that their concerns will be minimized or shrugged off. If home is not safe, then they will go elsewhere.
Yeah, I was frustrated, but it's only my first compassionate day. Yes, I am very worried that I won't be able to keep it up. Yes, I worry about my awful temper, but compassion, as a word, is striking me strongly and I think if I can hold onto that I'll be okay.

Love the Dickinson quote! And I relate to the comment you left on my blog about friendship...some ties are better loosened...
Btw, are you going to LDStorymakers this year? (or do you frequent many writers conferences?)
Hope you are well & writing!

Have that problem, love that book. Time to read it again.
Ahh, Cami, you should go! Esp if you live in UT! It's one of the most reasonably priced writing conferences you'll ever find. I've been to a few conferences already and enjoyed them immensely. I don't think you'd regret it and the networking, learning involved! Can I instead sit as a bird on your shoulder and whisper, "Go, go!" (You should, or at least, seriously consider it!)

What a wonderful post, a message I really needed today. Thank you for your insight Cami..
Gorgeous. This may be my favorite post of yours. You're losing your super power. Compassionate kryptonite never looked so good. Well done, my friend!
That Dane is a brilliant boy and so is his Mom. I'm glad you're losing your super powers, it looks good on you!
XOXO Mom
p.s. I kept forgetting to ask you about your trip to Provo, I don't have to ask you now. I'm glad you had fun!
